Biography

I have been carving stone for over 20 years and was originally influenced by the medieval sculptures that surrounded me in my work (I am a Cathedrals Archaeologist).

I am largely self-taught, with some training in a marble studio in Pietrasanta, Italy in 2012.

Sculptors that have influenced my work include the Romanian sculptor, Constantine Brancusi and Japanese sculptor Kan Yasuda. I particularly like the contemplative quality of their work.

Much of my early work was totally hand-carved, but now that I am working on large pieces of marble and sandstone (up to 5 tons in weight) I use both electric and compressed air tools for the roughing out stage, but still enjoy the more meditative hand finishing and sanding.

Over the last few years I have concentrated on forms influenced by microscopic organisms (such as diatoms) and pollen grains.

I am current researching ideas for sculptures influenced by the cosmos, dark matter and quantum physics.

During the Covid-19 lockdown I have been experimenting with the use of plaster. This has freed me up somewhat - working in stone I aim for perfection in finish and hate to see any scratches or tool marks (unless they are a deliberate part of the design). With the plaster sculptures I have aimed for a rough tool-marked finish.
